Endodontic treatment

Advanced treatment, known as root canal treatment (RCT). Demands lots of patience of either patient or dentist, but allows curing and saving inflamed tooth for many years.

Most courses of root canal treatment will involve two or more visits in surgery. During treatment a local anaesthetic is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. According to the latest scientific researches it is not possible to cure infected pulp (a nerve) - it has to be removed.

The alternative to RCT is to have the tooth extracted. Once the pulp is destroyed it cannot heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth because it becomes a source of further infections.

It is usually best to restore the tooth with the crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth. This can also improve the cosmetic appearance of the tooth. It is possible in some cases restore the tooth with filling only.
